Attack of the One-Legged Man!

We had perfect weather for the first 60 miles of the ride, but that quickly turned into an unknown mountain pass and 20 mph head winds. Today I felt like I had my best day on the bike and Dave had his worst. We made it to within ten miles of our goal town when we pulled over to discuss if we should even continue to battle the wind or just quit for the day. We decided to call in the cavalry and have my Dad drive ahead of us to block the wind.

As we forged on, we saw another cyclist coming towards us. This was a bit of a surprise given the weather conditions and the fact we were heading into some cow town in Montana. As the cyclist approached, the mild surprise turned into shock and awe. We could not help but notice this man had a vacant space where a person normally has a right leg. We did a double-take, confirmed our suspicion, and continued riding. The one-legged man then turned around. We slowed down, so he could ride into town with us and be protected from the terrible head winds. When we turned to say hello he attacked with all of the power his one leg could muster.

This immediately put us in an ethical dilemma. Do you counter-attack a man with one-leg? Do follow the original plan and wait for the car to arrive so we can draft behind, which could already be considered cheating, but definitely would be cheating to catch up to an attacking one-legged man. Or do we stand our distance and finish the ride conceding victory to the one-legged man? We selected the last option, and I already regret it.

Tomorrow is a powder day. Power days are usually awesome unless you are trying to ride your bike across a continent. I'm guessing we have a forced day off. No sprint points today. Dave retains all jerseys. We also are going to try and stop posting pictures of sunsets, mountains, and rivers in order to move onto some more exciting pictures.

  1. No worries, we like the "landscape pictures" here! Us non-biking novices are a little curious about how the jersey and point system works though! Good luck!
